Granite is in high demand these days and for good reason. It’s beautiful, durable, and adds value to your home. But, do you know what granite is and where it came from? Would you know the real deal if you saw it? Here’s what to look for:
To begin, granite is a strong natural stone surface derived from mountain rock which is a product of volcanic activity. It is used for countertops and flooring. It comes in numerous colors depending on where it came from. Some granite has a salt and pepper appearance, while other granite has a crystal-like appearance and flowing veins. Granite is very distinct in character and is long lasting and beautiful. It adds beauty to any home or office.
Because of its dense composition and durability, you may think just a wipe with a damp cloth or sponge is all the care it needs. However, caring for granite requires a high-quality cleaner that is safe for the surface and will seep into the pores and lift out oils and odors that are trapped inside. A good cleaner will not leave a residue. Cleaning is key to bringing out the beauty of granite and applying a sealer is extremely important to protect the surface. MARBLELIFE® carries high-quality cleaners and sealers for granite. Many cleaners contain acids which can harm your granite surface. MARBLELIFE® brand cleaners are free of acids. A MARBLELIFE® sealer will protect your granite from stains including red wine, coffee, barbeque sauce or colorful sports drinks and some sodas.
Hiring a certified MARBLELIFE® stone craftsman to care for your stone surfaces is an important decision to make. Our professionals are trained in all aspects of caring for your natural stone whether it is marble, quartz, or something else. Small areas can be a do-it-yourself project. However, MARBLELIFE® recommends you hire a professional for large surfaces such as floors and walkways, pool decking, and screen rooms.
MARBLELIFE® products are like having a professional in a bottle that allows you to polish your small marble surfaces and not just create a film over the surface. Our polishes can remove etches and light scratches thereby allowing you to avoid a service call. If you decide to do it yourself, you can restore your stone surfaces and make them look brand new again. However, MARBLELIFE® polish is designed for small repairs such as spots, spills, and cup rings on counter tops, vanity tops, and table tops. MARBLELIFE® polish is not designed for large areas like floors. Call a professional MARBLELIFE® certified stone craftsman for larger areas.
Quartz is similar to granite and is one of the most durable options for kitchens and baths. It is made from one of the hardest minerals available. Quartz comes in a wide variety of colors and contains veins and sparkles giving it an eye-catching appearance. It is different from granite in that quartz is engineered in a factory using 94% ground quartz in addition to polyester resins and pigments of a multitude of colors and hues. Small amounts of recycled glass as well as metallic specks are sometimes added to the mix to give it character. The resin helps to prevent stains and scratches seen with granite. Quartz is nonporous and does not require sealing. Once only available in a polished finish, it now comes in a matte finish, textured finish similar to slate and a glossy granite look. Although quartz does not need as much maintenance as granite, MARBLELIFE® offers cleaners and polishes for your quartz surfaces as well.
